1. What jobs are available in Materials?

Studying materials will prepare you for an incredibly wide range of jobs. You can pretty well choose any modern industry and find the need for people with knowledge and qualifications in materials. Here is a list of the top twenty – but there are hundreds more available through your Careers Office:   

Applications Manager
-responsible for a team who develop new uses for a companies materials and processes.

Ceramic Technologist
-may be involved in any or all stages of production from the extraction of raw material to supply of finished article.

Chief Metallurgist
-within a steelworks is responsible for a large team of staff who ensure that steel production is best possible at minimum cost.

Composite Applications Engineer 
-applies knowledge of composites to optimise their applications and thus develop new markets.

Consultant
-offers his or her specialist knowledge to other organisations to supplement their staff knowledge and experience.

Corrosion Control Engineer
-uses knowledge of corrosion processes to avoid corrosion by changing materials, product design or protection.

Development Engineer
-takes ideas from initial stage through to start of full scale production.

Director of Research
-decides which topic areas are worth exploring to expand knowledge and provide opportunities for earning money.

Foundry Manager
-ensures that the foundry owners receive a return on their investment by delivering castings to customers cost effectively.

Managing Director
-direct company strategy so that both short term profit  and long term growth are achieved and takes overall responsibility.

Metallurgist
-is a specialist in the science and engineering of metals and uses this to produce, process and apply metals effectively.

Polymer Chemist
-synthesises new polymers, develops additives which improve the processing and slow down degradation.

Polymer Technologist
-oversees the processing and application of plastics and rubbers to meet customer demands.

Process Control Engineer
-responsible for a process or group of processes running smoothly to appropriate technical and cost requirements.

Research Scientist
-undertakes materials research to increase knowledge as required by the sponsor whether government or industry.

Sales Manager
-responsible through team of staff for selling company products and making money in the process.

Technical Director
-takes ultimate responsibility within the company for all aspects of research, development and production.

Quality Manager
Ensures that all that is done in the company achieves the highest possible standards of quality and that this can be demonstrated.

Quality control Technician
-responsible for all materials and equipment being suitable for best practice and that they are operated as specified.

Welding Metallurgist
-applies knowledge of metallurgy to ensure that joints made by welding achieve their design strength and life.

Works Director
-takes responsibility for all operations within a particular company site and develops the site to ensure continuity of business.
